Spurred on by the protests, and marches of Occupy Wall Street in New York City, Michiganders throughout the state are organizing via Facebook by creating groups and pages for folks who want to be involved in the burgeoning movement in their local areas.
One group, Occupy Michigan in Lansing and Detroit, utilized Facebook to organize an initial rally in Lansing as well as another event in Detroit. (Details about these events are forthcoming.)
Meanwhile, discussion groups for Lansing’s General Assembly and Detroit’s General Assembly are engaged in debates and developing mission statements. Community pages, such as one called Occupy Michigan, provide space for people to network and share information.
But the Facebook occupation is just a launching pad. Several of these groups are preparing for face-to-face meetings and on-the-ground actions, which we’ll be reporting on in upcoming articles.
